Televangelist Pat Robertson has struck again. In the wake, of the devastating earthquake that hit Haiti this week, Pat Robertson didn't hesitate to put in his two cents. On Wednesday, he announced that Haiti has been "cursed by a pact they made with the devil".
Now, Robertson has historically made controversial comments and made no apology for them but this is certainly one that crossed the line. To blame the worst natural disaster in the history of Haiti on a pact with the devil, implying that they somehow deserved this as punishment just went way too far. All the women, children, elderly and volunteers that are missing, dying or dead...they certainly didn't deserve this.
But he's doing what he always does...
However, what's frightening is that he has a platform and a public voice with millions of viewers that hang on his every word. So if his followers are believing his theory, then that's scores of people that will turn a blind eye to the plight of an entire country. People that could otherwise text $5 (text: yele to 501501, Wyclef Jeans Yele Haiti Foundation) or $10 (Red Cross) and aid in the relief efforts that the rest of world are presently putting forward.
How are his comments different from hate crimes?
